SCHOOL RESOURCE

                                    Campus Security Council Members

In July of 2003 the Picayune Police Department entered into a partnership with the Picayune School District. The Picayune Police Department provides certified experienced police officers, which are also certified by the state of Mississippi, as school resource officers.

The School Resource Officers Division is under the direction of Juvenile Commander Captain Bryan Dawsey. The officer’s main duty is to provide security and protection for all the schools in the district, the students, and the school’s employees.

There are also many other duties that the school resource officer provides for the district. There are two certified D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructors who also reach out to all the 6th grade students in the district to teach them about the harmful effects that drugs, alcohol, and tobacco have on their bodies. The DARE program also teaches the students how to make the right decisions when faced with the pressures of everyday life.

Another tool that the DARE officers use to get their message out to the students is the DARE car. This is an award winning multi-colored vehicle that is also the #1 DARE car in the state for the last two years.

The School Resource Officers are also involved with other organizations such as Junior Achievement. This is a program that is set up for grades K-12. Junior Achievement’s purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics, which are designed to improve the quality of their lives.

The School Resource Officers at the Picayune High School and Junior High School also direct and oversee the campus security council. This is a club/organization that was started by Picayune Police Chief Jim Luke in 1994 that the members of the Security Council and the local police department work together to help make their schools a safer place. The Security Council is now recognized statewide and has been recognized by the Governor’s office, State Attorney General’s Office, and State Senators. Then Campus Security Council also works with local charitable organizations, works on projects in the school district and local community. The Security Council also provides scholarships to graduating seniors each year.

The School Resource Officer also provides security and protection for all the district’s school sponsored sporting events.

During the summer the School Resource Officers work with the local youth in the community at the youth camps that are sponsored by the Picayune Police Department each summer. Not only are the School Resource Officers in our schools to help keep them safe, but also they are there to build a positive relationship between all law enforcement officers and all of the students in the Picayune School System.
